It didn’t really peak. But the turning point, when people sat up and said, “Wow! We American’s CAN compete with the Brits” was the first single from the Mamas and the Papas, “California Dreamin’” It was a totally new sound in music. Then the American’s were off and running again.
The British invasion of the mid 60s actually began with Dusty Springfield and her one big hit, “I Only Want to Be with You” released in November, 1963. The next year the Beatles hit the scene and once they appeared on the Ed Sullivan Show in New York, the invasion was on in force. It continued until the early 70s when “punk” and other forms took over in Great Britain. A second invasion took place in the 1980s but was not as popular or as domineering as the first invasion. There are many groups of that era still touring and making guest appearances.
Have you seen a recent Super Bowl? Who is doing the half-time show? (That’s a joke – the Who did the half … never mind)
